SHIBI’s DIARY
My name is SHIBI, I am a Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
‘Yess…Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’

Part 15: It’s party time, my First Birthday!
I am writing after a long gap, I was busy 😉 with my Big-Bro. In my last post, I wrote about how my Diwali was made special by the arrival of my Big-Bro, and the next surprise came the week following when Momma kept her word and arranged a big party to celebrate my first birthday.
A day before the celebration, Momma tied a red colour scarf around my neck. I was curious to know what was written on it, so I kept rolling on the floor to get an eye on it. I heard her telling Big-Bro, ‘it’s a birthday scarf, we must get SHIBI used to wearing the scarf or she might tear it away on D-day.
I was curious to know what is D-day, and asked her, ‘Woof, Woof’
She laughed, ‘SHIBI, tomorrow we are celebrating your birthday, many guests and your friends will come, be a good girl and do not bark at them.’
I was excited to hear about my birthday party. I had never been to a birthday party and had no idea how it is celebrated. So I waited eagerly.
The next day Big-Bro decorated the room with balloons which after some time kept bursting one by one and sounded like crackers. I was terrified and hid under the bed. Momma was worried, she said if the balloons continue to burst then SHIBI will remain under the bed the whole time. She wanted to remove all the balloons but Big-Bro did not. He said SHIBI must learn to cope up with loud sound!
In the evening, Momma again tied the scarf on me, and said, ‘SHIBI, this is your first birthday party, so enjoy your day, and remember, do not scare the guests away.’
I assured her, ‘Woof, Woof’ with a twinkle in my eyes, and ran to the door as the bell rang. I saw my friends Ansh, Kushal and Vinesh waiting for me. I started running around in joy as they came inside. Soon all the guests arrived. As I had promised Momma, I behaved like a good girl, played with them, ran around, but did not bark even once.
Big-Bro then brought out a big cake, and wow, it had a picture of mine. ‘Woof, Woof’ I kissed Big-Bro. Before the cake cutting, Dada and Daadi put a tikka on my forehead, and blessed me. I felt being part of the family, accepted finally!
My first birthday party will stay in my memory forever, and I know it was Momma who wanted my birthday to be celebrated. One year, a long journey of ups and downs, especially between me and Momma. I looked at her with love. She understood me and patted,’ SHIBI, remember, you are my princess! Go and enjoy with your friends.’
‘Woof, Woof’…I barked and ran to play with my friends.
