Part 18: dew and the Mist
‘Dew falls, Mist disappears!’
Nihar stared at her with tenderness in his eyes, he then played with her curls and asked, ‘Kusumita, I want to know, do you ever repent marrying me?’
‘I am very much happy now.’ Kusumita replied coyly.
A smile twinkled on Nihar’s face, and he asked, ‘Hmm…. but earlier…!’
‘Yes, I had heard so much from Mohit about you.’
Soon she realized trouble as Mohit’s name slipped from her, anxiously she looked at him and waited for his reaction.
He tensed up, released his hands from her, and asked agitatedly,’ Mohit…? What Mohit told you?’
‘Nihar, it doesn’t matter now.’
‘I want to know what Mohit told you about me.’
She could feel anger in his voice. She then remembered the night when he had left her alone at the farmhouse and she turned nervous.
Trying hard to control his anger, he looked at her firmly, ‘Kusumita, it’s very important for me to know what he was talking about me….’
Now, she was forced to speak, ‘Mohit…he told me that you married Radhika for her money.’
He was very upset and closed his fists tightly.
She continued, ‘Nihar, I don’t care what he said. Now all this doesn’t matter to me, I never believed him.’
‘And if you had believed him then?’ His throat was choked, his eyes teary.
She was stunned, she had no answer for it.
‘Please say, if you had believed in him then?’ He stared deep into her hazels, trying to find an answer.
‘Then I would not have come back to you. I would not have been with you. I never wanted any luxury from my husband, I only want him to be truthful; I won’t be able to accept him if he has blood on his hands.’ She lowered her eyes, her tears flowed uncontrolled; she didn’t want to hurt him.
He took her in his embrace; his eyes were locked with hers. ‘Kusumita, I don’t know what you have heard about me. I want to assure you; that I don’t have anyone’s blood on my hands.’
‘I know it and for this reason, I am with you.’ She smiled, with tears in her eyes.
He tightened his grip around her, she could feel he was shaken and she held him tightly to comfort, to assure him.
The next morning, they returned to Delhi.
In her room, Kusum sat near the window and watched the rain. The droplets tinkled inside through the window that she had deliberately left open. She took out her hands slowly to feel the coolness of the rainwater and shivered with joy as the raindrops splashed on her hands.
Rains! They have always marked a new beginning in her life. She remembered how the rain had once played havoc in her life but that night she was introduced to another side of him. And today the raindrops seem to be dancing in joy, she was so much at peace now.
She closed the window and came out of the room. She wanted to meet him and walked towards his Study.
‘Kusumita…’
She heard Mohit’s shout. She wanted to avoid him and started walking fast.
‘Kusumita, please listen.’
But she kept on walking ignoring him completely but he took fast steps towards her, and soon came closer to her. He then almost stood in front of her and forced her to look at him.
‘Kusum, I am so glad to see you back. I heard there was some mishap in the farmhouse.’
She kept quiet. He probably realized her reluctance to speak.
‘I am worried for you. Take care.’ And slowly he walked away.
She kept staring at his back till he was no longer to be seen. She felt remorse for believing in him and warned herself again. ‘Kusumita, it’s best to avoid him. He keeps poisoning your mind.’
With a firm mind, she then moved to the Study.
She found Nihar was busy doing some clean-up as there was a pile of torn papers and old books on the floor. She stood outside the room and waited for him to notice her.
He noticed her and shouted, ‘Kusumita, come inside……’
She came inside the Study. ‘What are you doing?’
‘Removing my old stuff…’
She looked at them and realized, they were Radhika’s belongings which she had earlier seen in his cupboard once.
She acted ignorant, and asked, ‘Nihar, what are these things?’
He stared at her with hesitation for a while then spoke, ‘Kusumita, these are Radhika’s belongings. I am disposing of them.’
She could not believe, ‘Disposing of them? But why?’
He came near to her, placed his hands on her shoulder and looked into her eyes. ‘Yes, I do not need them anymore.’
Her mouth opened up in awe and she looked for an explanation. He came nearer to her, took her hands in his, kissed them and then softly looked into her eyes. ‘Kusumita, all these years I have spent in loneliness; I desperately want to come out of it. I don’t want to lose this second chance that life has given me. I want to live my life again, with you.
Shocked, her mouth again opened up and her eyes widened. Realizing what he said, she hurriedly went into his arms. His body was as warm as his voice and she felt he was hers finally but then she remembered.
‘What about Radhika? Is she out of your life now?’
‘I don’t know but I want to live my life again.’
‘But Nihar, what happened between you and Radhika?’
‘Please I don’t want to talk about it. It is between me and Radhika and it has no link with our relationship.’
She could sense that mentioning Radhika tensed him; she again went back into his arms to reassure him. ‘Nihar, it’s more important to me that you have decided to come out of your past. I will be always with you.’
‘Kusumita…’
His eyes shone, twinkled and smiled. She could feel his relief, she could feel the new life infused in him and she was relieved. Then they together removed all of Radhika’s belongings, she saw Nihar’s diary was also part of it…
At night, they were Nihar opened her hair and started playing with her curls, and said, ‘Kusumita, I have said what I felt about us and I am waiting eagerly to hear from you.’
‘What?’
‘What do you feel about me, about us?’
She stared at him for a moment; she wanted to pour out all that she was feeling but she felt shy.
‘Kusumita…’ he prompted her again.
‘Don’t you understand?’
‘I know but I want to hear from you.’
His fingers went into her hair and he kissed her ears. She looked at him helplessly, she felt so shy. Yes! She wanted to tell him that she also feels for him, she also believes in him but her voice defied her, her lips simply refused to open and she stared at him silently like a statue. He observed her face, the changing expressions on it…..!
‘Kusumita, I know what you feel, I am ready to wait.’
He took her in his embrace and she wrapped her arms around him holding him tight, close; she will never let him go away from her.
The next morning, after showering, she came to the mirror to dress up, and as she looked at herself in the mirror; her eyes oozed happiness and shyness.
Something has changed her life. She knew for sure it was his love but still, she asked her heart, ‘Really Nihar is in love with me? But then he has never said anything to me on that.’
Her heart said, ‘Kusum, you have seen it in his eyes. He has told you again and again that you mean a lot to him. He wants to have a fresh beginning with you. But why you did not confess your love last night? Are you still in doubt?’
She immediately replied, ‘Yes! I also feel for him. Finally, I have left all my doubts behind. I would confess my feelings to him soon.’
Her heart was filled with happiness. Of a sudden, she now wanted to dance and tell everyone that she is in love. No more did she cares for what people talk about him and for the first time, she truly wanted to hug her parents for choosing Nihar for her.
The trail of her thoughts broke when her cell phone rang. She was extremely surprised as it was from Nihar.
‘Nihar…!’ She erupted with excitement.
‘Kusumita, please get this file from my Study, I am sending someone to collect it.’ He said in a damp tone and disconnected the phone before she could reply.
Deeply disappointed, she threw the phone away.
