Part 1 – My Saviour!
SHIBI’s DIARY
My name is SHIBI, I am 6 months old Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
‘Yess…Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’

Part 1 – My Saviour!
My name is SHIBI, I am 6 months old Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
I must say, ‘Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’
I am staying with my Momma, Papa and big bro in a small city. I am happy and contented now but my life was not always like this.
I remembered the day, three months back, when I was in a cage in a Pet shop, put up for sale. The owner of the shop Jack was very shrewd and used to tell me that no one will ever adopt me and I will remain at his mercy forever. I never liked him and his cruel eyes.
How do such people become pet sellers? When do they do not feel anything for the animals?
I had come to Jack’s shop when I was two months old. My original owner had given me to Jack to sell. I heard them discussing that my mother and other siblings had died for some unknown reason, and I am the only one who had survived. My owner did not want to keep me any longer. So he gave it to Jack to sell to me at any price. He just wanted to get rid of me!
I do not remember my mother or my other siblings, I was too small when they left me. I started understanding the hardships of life when I came to Jack’s shop.
Jack kept me in a small cage and the only good part of being in the cage was that there was another puppy, a golden retriever, in the cage. We both used to play day and night, and hardly cared about Jack’s taunts.
And then one day my life changed when I saw this big boy who had come into the shop, and he was shouting at Jack, perhaps it was about money. Anyway, that scene was not new to me as I had seen many other people arguing with Jack over money. It seems he had taken money from many and did not delivered them the pet he had promised.
I looked at the big boy, he was tall and handsome, with big eyes, and I fell in love with him at that moment only. If was human then surely I would have even married him, but then love is universal, and beyond race, I was in love!
Arguments between Jack and the big boy became very heated, with Jack trying hard to pacify him. The boy was about to thrash Jack and then his eyes met mine. He came closer to me, stared at me for a while, and then looked at Jack, and said, ‘I am taking her with me.’
Jack was relieved, and smiled, ‘Yes, why not. She is yours.’
The big boy took me out of the cage and cuddled me in his arms. He kissed me on my forehead, and said, ‘My SHIBI’. I looked into his eyes and knew instantly that my future would be exciting, and secured.
The boy asked Jack, ‘how old is she ?’ Jack said, ‘6 weeks’. I immediately wanted to tell the boy, ‘Do not believe Jack, he is a born liar. I am not that small. I look lean, and small as Jack hardly feed us.’
But I kept quiet, and prayed that the boy takes me with him.
The big boy and Jack discussed it again, they seem to agree within a few minutes. The big boy then carried me in his arms to his car, and I was out of that cage. Free!
Free from Jack’s taunts and misery, but then not free from my anxiety. Where my destiny is taking me to? Another Jack?
SHIBI, the Beagle.
