Book Review : When Mommy Was a Little Girl
About the Book:
Have you imagined your Mommy as a ‘little girl’? Have you ever wondered what your Mommy was as a ‘little girl’? Was she well-behaved or a mischievous prankster? Did she stay indoors or did she love sneaking out of the house to play with her friends, or to cycle and climb trees? Did she drape her mother’s saree and apply her make-up? Did she dance in front of the mirror?
When Mommy Was a Little Girl is an anthology of 15 stories of mommies from different parts of India, to tell the stories of what they did when they were ‘little girls’ – of the fun they had, the pranks they played, their love-hate relationship with their siblings, and how they troubled their parents and much more. Targeted to the age group of 8 – 16 years, the book is an attempt to provoke the children to think that their mommies too had a childhood like them.
Arthy Muthanna Singh, Cheryl Rao, Debjani Mukherjee. Lipika Bhushan Uniyal, Madhumita Mandal, Mamta Nainy, Mitra Phukan, Nandini Nayar, Rati Girish, Ratna Manucha, Richa Jha, Rohini Vij, Shyamala Shanmugasundaram, Varsha Pillai and Vidya Nesarikar have contributed to When Mommy Was a Little Girl.
Book Review:
Mommy Was a Little Girl – when the book came to me for review, I was little curious to know what kind of stories all other mommies experienced in their childhood? Is it the same as what I had experienced?
I must say the book is a brilliant idea executed perfectly and honestly. One can feel the amount of love the editorial team has put in the project. The stories are chosen from different parts of the country, with each story having a unique flavour. There are cute illustrations with each story that helps to visualize the context. At the end of the book –a description in the form of a game is given to understand how we address our relations in different languages, which I felt very thoughtful, and educative for the young children.
Coming to the content, it’s a delightful collection of short stories! Every story is relatable and brings back fond memories of our childhood. The beautiful part is that the individual experiences are so varied that it leaves no scope for monotony and the interest of the reader is maintained throughout. Though there are 15 authors with different writing styles but when you read the stories one by one, there is a certain flow and connection, which makes you finish the book in one go. The language used is very simple and easy to understand.
So what I felt missing in the book – the stories leave you with a feeling of loads of cuteness. As the age group targeted is 8-16 years – a few more mischievous, adventurous, book-loving (I missed that), young-adult mommies’ stories could have been included. Also, in every story, “Little Mommy” is used to maintain a flow and consistency. At one point, I felt, if the author’s name would have been used for the protagonist, then how it would have been?
Overall, the book is an interesting read both for the children as well as grown up. I loved the book, and the thought-provoking idea behind the project – to make the child think that their mommies too had a beautiful childhood !
